Good news about HRT
|
Recent studies reported in Gynaecology Forum (Volume 13 no 4 2008) based on re-analysis of older studies and new data show that, for most women, the potential benefits of HRT when initiated within a few years of menopause and prescribed for clear indications are many while the risks are few. The association between breast cancer and HRT is controversial but small ( 0.1% per annum) which is consistent with the view that oestrogens cause an increase in growth of an existing cancer but do not initiate cancerous change. Oestrogens appear to have a protective effect on colon and lung cancer. Oestrogens are the most effective treatment fot the truly oestrogen-dependent symptoms of menopause - namely hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbance and dry vagina.
